What Is TURBT?
Transurethral resection of bladder tumor is a minimally invasive procedure where Dr. Libby uses a specialized instrument (resectoscope) passed through the urethra to visualize, remove, and obtain tissue samples from bladder tumors. The resectoscope includes a cutting wire that resects (removes) visible tumor tissue. Tissue samples are sent to pathology to determine tumor grade and stage, which guide follow-up treatment decisions. TURBT is the first-line treatment for most early-stage bladder tumors.

What to Expect
Before TURBT
You'll have an imaging evaluation (cystoscopy or imaging scan) to visualize and locate the tumor. Dr. Libby will discuss the procedure and what the tissue results will mean. You'll fast the night before and arrange for transportation home after sedation.
During the Procedure
Under general or spinal anesthesia, the resectoscope is passed through the urethra into the bladder. Dr. Libby systematically identifies and resects all visible tumor tissue using the cutting wire. He also obtains samples from the tumor base to assess how deeply it has invaded the bladder wall. The procedure takes 30-90 minutes depending on tumor size and number.
Recovery
You go home the same day or next day depending on the extent of resection. You may have a catheter temporarily if extensive resection was performed. You'll notice blood-tinged urine and mild burning with urination for several days — this is normal. Avoid strenuous activity for 2-4 weeks. Return to normal activities gradually. Pathology results guide any additional treatment needed.
