What Is TURP?
TURP is a surgical procedure that uses an instrument called a resectoscope passed through the urethra to remove excess prostate tissue that blocks urine flow. The resectoscope includes a cutting wire and irrigation system that allows Dr. Libby to see the prostate clearly and remove tissue with precision. Because the procedure doesn't require an incision in the skin, TURP is minimally invasive and recovery is faster than traditional open surgery.
Why TURP Is the Gold Standard
- Proven effectiveness — decades of clinical use with excellent long-term results
- Durable symptom relief — most men experience lasting improvement for many years
- High success rate — 85-90% of patients report significant symptom improvement
- No external incision — procedure is performed entirely through the urethra
- Well-established safety profile — surgeons worldwide have extensive experience
Who Is a Candidate?
TURP is ideal for men with moderate to severe BPH symptoms who have failed medical therapy. The procedure works best for prostates of moderate size (typically 30-90 grams). Dr. Libby will evaluate your symptoms, prostate size from imaging, and overall health to determine if TURP is right for you.
What to Expect
Before the Procedure
You'll meet with Dr. Libby to discuss your symptoms, undergo imaging to measure prostate size, and complete pre-operative testing. Plan to fast after midnight the night before. You'll receive instructions about medications to avoid, and you should arrange for someone to drive you home.
During the Procedure
TURP is performed under spinal or general anesthesia and typically takes 60 to 90 minutes. Dr. Libby carefully removes excess prostate tissue using the resectoscope, visualizing the tissue directly throughout. A catheter is left in place to help with drainage as swelling reduces.
Recovery and Results
Most men go home the next day with a catheter in place. The catheter is typically removed after one to two days. You'll experience some burning with urination and possible spotting for two to three weeks as the tissue heals. Avoid strenuous activity for four to six weeks. Most men notice improved flow and reduced nighttime urination within two weeks, with complete healing in six to eight weeks.
